Mitigation is the ongoing effort to lessen the negative impact of hazards based on one’s vulnerability. Priority must be given to people, property and the environment. The focus is to reduce or eliminate the amount of damage a hazard can do through structural and non-structural scientific interventions. Structural refers to physical aspects such as engineering, architecture and construction. Non-structural refers to the enforcement of legislation, policies, planning consideration, training and education.
